THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb 9, 2011) – The SUNY Maritime men’s lacrosse team has two pairs of brothers on the roster for the upcoming 2011 season: one set of twins, the Korbs (Ryan and Alex), and a pair of brothers separated by two years, the Messinas (Keith and Matthew). The brothers will be checking in with MaritimeAthletics.com throughout the preseason and regular season with blog updates that give us an inside look of what’s going on in their lives both on and off the field.
Today’s blog entry comes from sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville).
It’s finally lacrosse season! I’ve been looking forward to this since the school year started. The first two weeks of practice went alright. We were in the gym, which I didn’t mind because I was getting to practice. I’d rather have been outside in the cold on the field practicing, but the field was covered with snow. We were just making the best of the situation and working our hardest regardless.
It’s early in the season, but I already have a good feeling that we can win the conference this year. We are really talented and have a lot of depth in every position. I’m most excited to be playing on the same team as my brother and it would be great if we could win the conference together.
I really like the new assistant coach, Steve D’Argenio. He has a lot of good ideas for the offense. Everyone on the team is beginning to understand the basics for the offense and defense for this coaching staff, which is good so we can work on the hard stuff.
On Saturday, head coach Dan Lawrence asked us to write something that we expected everyone to do this season. He said he wanted us to be like a family. I already feel like we are because even when we’re not on the field were hanging out and joking around. I wrote down that I expect everyone to push each other to be the best person that they can be both on and off the field.
We finally got outside on the field this week! Well, it’s more like just a box that was shoveled out about half the field. I don’t know which is better, the gym or outside because it’s so cold out. You got to love the nice breeze at Maritime! I can’t wait till Feb. 26 to start the season!
