The Siena Women’s Lacrosse team faced a tough matchup in their season opener Wednesday, falling at crosstown rival UAlbany 18-2 at John Fallon Field. Maggie Deloria and Allie Primo each scored for the Saints.
Siena (0-1) goalie Kristin Concordia kept the game close early on, making 10 first half saves. UAlbany (1-0) had a number of chances early, but only led 3-0 going into the final 10 minutes of the half thanks to Concordia’s efforts. She would finish with 16 saves while adding team-highs of eight groundballs and two caused turnovers.
But the Great Danes finished the half strong, scoring seven goals in the final 9:42 of the stanza to take a commanding 10-0 lead into the half.
Siena got on the board when Deloria scored the team’s first goal of the season with 15:22 remaining on a free position shot. Primo added the final tally with 2:13 remaining.
UAlbany out-shot Siena 44-11 and picked up 26 groundballs to the Saints 16. The Saints had trouble clearing their own zone as they were only successful on nine of their 23 clear attempts while Albany cleared the zone 11 of 12 times.
Seven different UAlbany players scored goals led by Taylor Frink and Mel Rorie who each tallied five goals apiece.
The Saints return to action Saturday when they host UMass in the 2011 home opener at Siena Turf Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
