CORTLAND, N.Y. –  The nationally fifth-ranked RIT men’s lacrosse team scored five of the last six goals of the game to earn a come-from-behind, 12-11, win versus fourth-ranked Cortland Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons fell to 4-2 with the loss, while the Tigers improved to 6-0.

Freshman Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) led Cortland with three goals. Junior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) recorded two goals and an assist to become the 20th player in school history to score 100 career goals. Senior Neal Hoops (Akwesasne/Massena) scored twice, and senior Chris DeLuca (Sayville) had a goal and four assists and won 9-of-14 faceoffs.

Junior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit), sophomore Sean Davern(Irondequoit) and freshman Mark Panneton (Niskayuna) each scored a goal with Wright and senior Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) contributing two assists. Senior Justin Battino (Plainview) won 9-of-13 faceoffs and matched DeLuca with six ground balls. Sophomore goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made six saves in 58 minutes, 10 seconds before giving way to freshman Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder), who did not stop a shot over the final 1:10.

Eight different players scored goals for the Tigers, paced by junior Jordan Collins-Hartwig (Buffalo/Clarence), who recorded five points on three goals and two assists. Seniors Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) each registered two goals and an assist with senior Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and junior Tyler Russell (Livonia) chipping in with one goal and one assist apiece. Senior goalie Bob Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT) turned aside 13 shots.

The Red Dragons opened up a 6-2 lead after the opening quarter and stretched the advantage to 7-2 early in the second quarter before RIT ran off five straight goals to pull even at 7-7 with 8:40 to play in the half. Cortland took the lead into intermission on Slavik’s second goal of the game at the 7:36 mark.

Slavik and Tota made it a 10-7 game with goals at 12:01 and 8:50 of the third before the game took a strange turn in favor of RIT. After Cortland gained possession of a loose ball  on a Tiger turnover, a Cortland defender threw a pass into the Red Dragons’ goal at 6:11 to make it a 10-8 game. RIT then scored three goals midway through the fourth quarter to take an 11-10 lead with 6:30 remaining. With time winding down, Tonnessen made a save on a high shot by Cortland sophomore Tim Rommel (Syracuse/Henninger) and the Tigers successfully cleared the ball with just more than a minute to play. After two timeouts, the Tigers were able to keep possession and Bressler scored into an empty net with 29 seconds left.

DeLuca, however, won the ensuing faceoff and assisted on Hopps’ second goal of the game with 18 seconds on the clock. Cortland won the next faceoff but RIT junior Avery Hallett (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) forced an immediate turnover and the Tigers were able to run out the clock for the win.
